On the piano the little symbols and numbers that represent notes that aren’t shown?
I learned to play the piano pretty much by myself, mainly without a lot of the books used to teach you what all of the little symbols mean, although most I can figure out. Lately, I decided to start playing Chopin, it was fine until I realized that there were some parts that weren’t in my book, usually just little “flourishes” (for lack of a better word) that represent a few notes in between the ones shown. it sounds okay without them, but it bothers me because it’s not the “whole” song and I have no idea of how to play those parts, is there somewhere online that will tell you what they represent and mean? http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b53/bunniepage/notething.gif
It’s a “turn” you’ll be playing four notes for that one. Because the turn indicates a flat above and a natural below, you’ll be playing the Db (above the C indicated), the C, the B natural and the C again. (I can only assume this piece is in F, Bb, Eb, or Ab)
4321 is an editor’s mark for fingering the notes. Ring finger on the Db, Middle finger on the C, Index finger on the B, and thumb under to play the C … the music must have a stretch upward on the next note.
Placing the turn before the note, rather than over it, indicates something about how to play it, but it all really comes down to how it sounds.
