Learning the piano …?

My cello teacher told me that when he was studying as a boy, all students the workshop has played the piano for the other. A child would go up to play while the latter went with him. Then they would switch. It made me think. Do you think it's important for instrumentalists (except pianists) to be required to learn the piano at school? I think the game has helped me enormously to the theory of playing the piano parts to hear how matters come before I 'm with my pianist. Also, do you think singers should be required to play the piano? I separate them only because I do not know enough about the singers. I know singers (Modern stuff), but not trained classical singers. ALL Majors music at my university are required to take piano and the piano proficiency examination. Vocalists should know enough about the piano where they can themselves halfway accompany at least.
