Tips on how to learn a foreign language
When we speak of languages I speak are English, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish, many of which may look like an impressive number, but before that some people the idea that I should be admired for my language skills, I want to say that this is due to circumstances more then skill. Firstly I was born in New York, where I spent the first 3 months before being sent to live with my grandparents who spoke both Spanish and Italian, so we would expect the languages I started were to speak Spanish and Italian. By the time I was five, I talked about these two languages as well but I do not speak English at all it was In this spirit, among other things, that my parents took me back to New York where I began to learn English. Was strange first for me, going to school in a country that has been my own hearing people speak a language I do not understand. But with time since I'm still the youngest age in which languages are delivered with ease, the English began to become more understandable and more and a great way it was the cartoons that I watched on television that I had already seen me in Spanish that helped. Because of this factor that I experienced when I learned English at age 5 years than I can say that those who are in their very early years did not need language taught to them as they learn themselves. With this in mind I urge parents whose desire is to see their children learn a foreign language or two just to expose their children to the language as I been by my parents sent me to a school where everyone spoke English.
Of course, in giving this advice I do not lost sight of the fact that all parents have at their disposal the chance to send their child to a school where the language they want their child to learn is spoken, either because they do not live in a country where it is spoken or they lack the money to send their children to school where all subjects are conducted in that language. To these parents I suggest that constant exposure to this language by all means them would be most appropriate. When I say what I have in mind that parents naturally if they speak the language in question has to do with their children, this principle is how most people learn to speak a language at the start of their parents.
However, for parents who are not speakers of the language they want for their child or children to learn, so I suggest to expose their child or children in that language by the through television as "Cartoon Network" or maybe DVD movies. As an idea to follow first the child shows the film in his first language, then in the second, repeat this as many times as possible every day. For many parents, it may seem that their children will lose time when they sit in front of television and to a large extent, but not time spent watching television should not be a waste of time especially if it can help their child learn a foreign language. I remember my many years as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher, a child five years. It was this child who spoke fluent English. Of course, grammatical errors, but again the child of his age has not. Regarding his accent, I can truly say that this child of Warsaw, Poland, spoke English with no trace of his accent, which would have yielded even a foreign accent trained ear like mine it was not an American. One might think that I only have the child had time in America or another English speaking country or whose parents were English, but when I asked the mother of the child she informed that this child was not set foot in an English-speaking neither she or her husband spoke no English what so ever. Regarding the teachings were concerned, had only those who have been offered to the public school he attended, which did not exceed those that have learned the basics. Curiosity took over my actions at this point to make me wonder how it could be their son to speak fluent English as an American child of his age, even without the slightest trace a foreign accent. To this question, I was greeted with the response that the child looked "Cartoon Network" in English almost 24 hours a day.
If there is an unfortunate side of language learning is that those who have not started at an age very early in life most of the time is always at a disadvantage for those who do. They tend to speak with an accent that is classified as foreign and the struggle most with the grammar but I am not saying this in order to deter, but to inform those who begin after age 10 they must work harder. Of course, this does not mean they will not learn and learn well, but perhaps some nuances of the language will be lost for them.
There are many reasons for wanting or needing to learn a language to live in a country in search of employment as other than I will not repeat all that, however much reason there are also methods. If the later be the case, I found that the method "target" to be most effective when the issue is simply to learn to communicate. Like what most people seek when they study language. By communicating I'm thinking of learning to understand and be understood in a second language, which, by its own virtue does not focus on both grammar rules, but on how we should speak a language using the grammar rules, without necessarily a lot of rules that would not necessarily make a better speaker. I have in my fourteen years as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers have come to discover that those more familiar rules such as when to use "perfect gift", as opposed to when to use "simple past" does not speak still more grammatically correct but it is important to have a basic understanding of the time if you want to use them properly. During this period, there are many, I taught my students, but also much that I discovered by myself and my two children and their teacher Here are some tips that I want to provide those who seek to learn a language:
-Find a teacher or a school, which is more important in total beginners as languages are not like the story that can be learned only by reading. Languages Spoken require the party is to learn how words are made in languages that are not always systematically phonetic is for this reason, I recommend getting a teacher. For beginners I also suggests starting early in a group because what people are most in need of repetition. For example, a teacher can begin with each student saying "My name is ___." and if there were 20 students in the class then we should hear this phrase repeated many times and thus making it more provable that the sentence will remain in our minds, if we had just heard was repeated twice. groups give advance more slowly, but the speed at which we cover material is not the issue but what is, is how much of it we eat and especially when I noticed I was doing my studies in French and Polish how much easier it is to learn things because of the repetitive nature found in groups.
-When learning a second language, we must think in the language we are trying to learn. There are those however who can say that for beginners it is neither possible nor desirable, but those I would say instead that it is. The reason I say that for example if a person is to learn Spanish and the first sentence it is presented with is "Yo me llamo ___." (My name is ____.) then he or she must say this phrase does not translate into English, then repeated in Spanish, but knowing that the phrase means and just repeat it. This method may be slower in the beginning, but will pay off in the future because if the student can say the phrase in the language he or she learns without having to translate in her mind it will possible for students to become comfortable that this person will be able to speak without thinking about the words. fluent is when a person has an idea and can put this idea into words without thinking of words as they come automatically. Naturally, this does not mean that if a person speaks a language fluently, he or she will speak the language correctly because they are two different things. The control on how much time elapses from the time between thinking of mind at the moment the words come out and only that. Many of my students asked me many times how can we believe in the language they speak and I say the following. When speaking or repeating a phrase or word in a language must believe that the only language they speak, or that knows only the language tries to speak. In other words we must not forget all the other languages we can talk and if we speak a language common foreign easier, the reason being that the translation is going to slow down a low. This is even more true when listening a language because if we had to stop and translate each word into another language that is said about us when we translated the first word of the entire sentence had spent time in this spirit that I say that we should think in the language we speak or listen to forsaking all others.
-To learn a language when one wants to translate a sentence what we should do is to translate the general idea of the sentence, not word by word, but as a unit for it is where we see the general idea. For example, in Italian we say "I Io chiamo Gianni" which, translated word by word would be: "My name Gianni "which in English is not the same meaning. However, if this not translate word by word, but the general idea we would have" My name is Gianni. The reason for this is that the truth is that every language is different, and not only that the words are different, but their grammar. Grammar be around in which we place words. Sometimes, however, this is not a question of grammar, in itself differs from one language to another. For example I can give that Polish uses only three times (past, present and future) and has no articles, definite or indefinite but the way people talk. For example, in French, it is correct to say "I have 40 years" which, when translated directly into English would be "I'm 40 years" which in plain English would be "I Am" 40. This prove my point of view that is not always a matter of grammar but the how people speak in languages other than what he is doing the same thing is expressed in a different way. For example I can give added that the phrase in Polish "Happy Birthday" does not exist, but instead of his Polish people say (from a literal translation) "All best wishes".
"Do not ask why! In language it is not important why do not use Polish items or why English has no items that differentiate men and women like the French who was in the form or "the" and "the" or why the Spanish and Italian do not use the letter "k" to spell any of their own words. What is important is to understand how language is and speak as such and not waste time analyzing why it is a way or manner has been fact and not another. Knowledge, even if we could find out why not help us speak the language we are trying to learn why so many of we have two eyes instead of three to help us see better. So in short do not worry about why so just accept it and speak it or write it as such.
Languages do not require thought or at least none that is analytical, but the ability to understand a situation and repeat the sentence he explains to another person. For example, when we say "It's a pen." We establish what something is and whether the object we put in place, a table, then the structure would be the same "This is a table". These two sentences do we have to change a word, but not the structure should not change since the situation did not.
"Do not be afraid to make mistakes. When learning a language errors are inevitable as it fell to a child learning to walk. If the child or his parents were afraid their child would never drop the child learn to walk with the same language. I always tell my students that if they can not avoid the mistakes to a minimum, they should try to learn them. One reason people are afraid or perhaps embarrassed about mistakes is what others might think. That if we do not think logically about should not be a problem as those who know understand that the person speaking is not a native speaker of that language and not only to understand whether This person makes some mistakes, but do not think less of that person to do it.
-Using the grammar is not the most important thing! If we are teachers of the language or writers in that language, grammar, and not the most important thing if we want people of other to understand what we say. Grammar becomes a problem when we are misunderstood or not at all. For example, if I heard someone say: "I had bought a book yesterday, "I understand that this person has bought a book yesterday. This despite the fact that he or she has used "Past Perfect" in a situation where he or she should have used "the simple past. So my advise to those who speak a foreign language is not to worry what is grammatically correct and just talking.
Practice as much as possible! To learn a language and we need at least 20 contact hours week with the language. I mean to take lessons, but they are not enough. For example, if a person has piano lessons would not be sufficient to learn the piano as a person should have a piano, he or she could practice at home on the lessons would not otherwise be so beneficial. Having said this I recommend those who do not live in a country where the language is spoken they want to learn is to seek more contact with the language in question as possible. Maybe as observation of television in that language, make friends with people who speak that language, or simply have a romantic who contribute knowledge also its language needs outside of all rest.
The four-party languages are the following: speaking, reading one's writing a and listening. To practice the latter all we need is to see films in that language may be even with subtitles. Regarding reading what we practice for the reason that it is the best way for us to expand our vocabulary in the language we have time to watch the words we do not understand. Writing should be improved by reading, because after seeing the words several times, which should teach us to define it. The speech is perhaps the most difficult to practice because it is more appropriate not to do this alone, because it forces a self-response.
In all my years as a language teacher and learner of languages, it has been my experience that taught me that when talking or learning one language as in life all we can do is our best and only hope that if I leave this spirit in those who should read this with the following reflection. It is best to speak a language not so bad because if we really think about how many people speak a language perfectly grammatical even their own let alone a second or foreign language.
