Is it really possible to play the piano by ear?
Playing by ear is the ability to play a song (or, possibly, to learn an instrument) by simply listening to repeatedly. The majority of self-taught musicians began their education this way, they picked up their instruments and began playing an easy melody from a well-known song, slowly picking up the notes as. Even after these musicians master their instruments or a particular song, playing by ear still plays an important role.
Many pop Rock does not play or write their songs on sheet music, they are playing on songs by ear. It is even common among non-musicians. Always sit and mindlessly choose a piano melody of "Mary Had a Little Lamb"? What is striking a guitar and turn around and play the opening licks to "Smoke on the Water"? is playing by ear. You are able to play a fair part of the song because you have heard so often.
Playing by ear is a valuable technique for many musicians, songs, learning based solely on hearing them is a great way to understand song structure and agreement. In fact, a large number of rock and pop musicians learned to play their instruments this way. Instead of taking a book or take lessons, they concentrated on understanding the notes and rhythms of a song before it is controlled. Then they switched to another song. And another. Gradually, they learned their instruments while playing by ear – and in the process learned how to structure a song in this genre.
Playing by ear is also beneficial in helping a musician develop his own style, of course, they will first imitate the style of the song they're imitating, but the fusion of music they play by ear help them create something distinctive, something indicative of them only.
Though classical musicians are generally educated based on tons of music theory and sight reading, some methods rely on playing by ear. Suzuki Method musical training, for example, asserts that learning music is the same as learning a language, it has acquired through years of hearing, possibly associated with formal training. As we take our language by listening to our parents and then attending school we can learn music by playing by ear and later taking formal lessons.
Thus, the average person can expect to play their piano by ear? Maybe not the degree that some extremely talented musicians do, but anyone can learn enough about the basics of playing the ear if they learn the following skills:
Being able to hear a melody and have a general sense of the contour melody – when the air moves more or less than the song progresses.
Learning to melodic contour graph is on paper or in their memory.
Learning to match the melody of appropriate agreements.
Playing by ear is really a combination of three factors:
1. Use of sound memory to recall the music you've heard:
2. Use your ears and fingers to help you reproduce what you remember;
3. Using the "melodic contour" (the "form" of the melody), the structure of understanding "(how to form agreements on the keyboard to match the height), and chord progressions" (agreements path to take as they move through a song).
Obviously, the first step 2, you can take more or less by yourself – you can mentally rehearse a tune recalling in particular, you can sit at the piano for hours and by trial and error selection of melodies, chords and rhythms. But the real key to understanding the ear is to learn to draw the shape of a melody, learn to build agreements, and determine the probability of chord progressions – in other words, what comes after agreement.
When you have an understanding of the third stage, you are in a much better position to understand and benefit from steps one and two!
